Word of the Day

Hair

As a young girl I had beautiful thick, dark hair.  I have always loved my hair and basically took for granted.  Perhaps I never realized how important hair was to my self-worth until I didn’t have it.

I lost my hair due to cancer and chemo.  When it started falling out in clumps it was devastating. Even though I knew it was going to happen, I wasn’t prepared for the emotions it would invoke in me especially as my sweet daughter shaved my head.

When my hair came back, it was never the same.  Much of the curl was gone and it was thin.  I was grateful not to have to wear a wig, but sad that it was not the texture and strength I had hoped for.  But, I told myself over and over, “at least, you have hair.”  A motto I try to remember when I start feeling sorry for myself.  I’m just grateful it came back!
